Role: Information Architect
Company: Dailey & Associates
Honda Powersports is a division of Honda that includes motorcycles, ATVs, scooters, and personal watercraft. We were tasked to create a complete interactive microsite experience for Honda’s new cutting-edge street motorcycles, the CBR 600RR and CBR 1000RR. This project was done as a part of the creative team with Dailey, a full-service advertising agency in Los Angeles.
• Create a website application that uses a 3d scan of motorcycle and lets users create their own design
• User generated images of the motorcycle designs can be saved to a public facing online viewing gallery
• Promote the history of Honda CBR
• Design a new web application that users can apply custom decals to a virtual Honda CBR
• Create a compelling user experience
• Use the DNA theme we were provided with by the Honda
As Dailey is an interactive advertising agency, much of the development was done as a part of the creative team.
I was paired with in-house designers and project managers and we worked in a fast, friendly, ever changing environment where new requirements and ideas would happen by the hour.
The typical process outline at Dailey looked like this:
The personas we were given were very straight forward and our main users would be enthusiasts who are most likely Honda CBR motorcycle owners and have some degree of riding experience. The second main type was a casual user who has a interest in learning more about motorcycles in general.
During the initial IA phase, the site map is planned out and a taxonomy is created to help identify and classify information. This also creates the navigation architecture that will be used in the design of the micro-site.
The project was successfully implemented and ran for a year or two before being shelved and replaced with a current offer. You can see the completed designs below. I also delivered IA for all other projects related to Honda Powersports during my employment at Dailey.
This was the final homepage design. One of the challenges was to present both motorcycles equally and let the user browse between them. Please note, I did not do the visual design for this project - I did the Information Architecture specifications and annotated wireframe deliverables to which the designers used as guidelines.
The main feature of the website was the Design Your Own CBR online design tool that would allow a user the add decals and color to a 3D model CBR motorcycle. The user could also change the rim style and save the image to the public online gallery where it could be downloaded by any site visitor as a computer desktop background in various sizes. Examples can be seen on both left and right panels in the screenshot above.

Screen shot of the finished explore section. the user could turn the motorcycle in a 360 degree view and interact with hot spots placed on parts of the bike the manufacturer wanted to emphasize.
Explore section - This is the history page that shows a timeline of the milestone developments of the venerable Honda CBR. We were given a DNA theme to adhere to that was part of a larger marketing campaign.
